  • A Bengaluru bride has inspired the internet with her “zero-waste wedding” that she organised with the help of her mother for a celebration that also commemorated Mother Earth. In a video, Dr Poorvi Bhat documented snippets from her wedding as she said: “It was only because of the cooperation of our families that my dream of a zero-waste wedding was possible.”

The mandapa was made of sugarcane while food was served on banana leaves. As for the venue, it was decorated with mango and coconut leaves. The couple’s wedding garlands featured only flowers and cotton threads, devoid of plastic attachments.

In the video, Dr Bhat elaborated: “My wedding was zero-waste and here’s how we did it. Our mantapa was made of sugarcane which we fed to our cows after the celebration. There was no single use cups or plates. The food was served on banana leaves and stainless steel cutlery. Our decorations were done using mango and coconut leaves which used significantly less water to grow. Our garlands were made of only flowers and cotton threads with no plastic attachments.”
